🧑‍💻 What can UX Designers learn from Software Engineers? More than you think!

Dagna Bieda discusses her book “Brain Refactor” and how tech professionals can optimize their mindset for success. She explores common career obstacles and strategies for overcoming them.

What if you could refactor your brain like software to unlock your full potential?

Your body is a lot like a machine. It's an organic machine, but a machine nonetheless.

Most machines have a way to control it.

Your car is basically a driving computer running on software and processors.

The human body is a machine, but instead of lines of code and silicon processors, we have our brains.

If the human brain is a lot like a computer, what happens when we find an issue?

With Wix Studio, you can quickly adapt designs for every device, reuse assets, my favorite, export from Figm, and much more.

If the human brain is a lot like a computer, what happens when we find an issue?

  • Maybe we have trouble with our relationships.
  • Maybe we have issues getting promoted.
  • Maybe we can’t quite finish important projects.

Can we treat these things like bugs, debug the issue, then rewrite the code?

This week, Dagna Bieda, Software Engineer turned career coach and Author of the new book “Brain Refactor,” joins me to discuss how we can rework our brains to get the outcomes we want.

🎯 Here are some key takeaways from our chat

1️⃣ Practice psychological distancing by viewing your brain as a product separate from your essence: This perspective allows you to analyze and refactor your thought patterns and behaviors objectively, just as you would debug and optimize software.

2️⃣ Debug your mental obstacles by identifying the root causes of issues: What's causing imposter syndrome or burnout? Treat these challenges like bugs in a system and develop strategies to address them at their source rather than just treating the symptoms.

3️⃣ Be open to feedback from various sources: Feedback isn't always verbal–it can come in the form of missed promotions, workplace dynamics, or personal feelings. Embrace these insights as opportunities for growth and improvement.

4️⃣ Optimize your "internal code" by regularly reviewing and updating your beliefs, habits, and reactions: Just as you would continuously improve a digital product based on user feedback and new technologies, continuously refine your mindset and behaviors based on new experiences and insights.

5️⃣ Recognize that your work doesn't speak for itself: You must actively promote your contributions. Reframe self-marketing as educating others about the value you bring rather than bragging. Consistently communicate your achievements and impact to ensure your efforts are recognized and rewarded.
