🌏 The Importance of Cultural Intelligence in UX Design with Ruby Pryor

Discover how cultural nuances shape the experience for a user and learn some simple strategies for creating products that resonate across a diverse international audience.

How can designers create products that feel native to users across the globe?

Are your design decisions alienating cultures on the other side of the world?

Unless your product is hyper-localized, anyone in the world can sign up and use whatever you’re building…

That is, of course, you scare them away.

But what might scare those users away?

Well, it might not take much!

But first, check out this week's sponsor:

With Wix Studio, you can quickly adapt designs for every device, reuse assets, my favorite, export from Figm, and much more.

But what might scare those users away?

Well, it might not take much!

❌ Confusing references to time zones
❌ Date/time formats that don’t make sense
❌ Assuming their name is incorrect when it’s not.
❌ Confusing first/last name with given/family names.
❌ Talking about summer when it’s winter where they live.

These are just a few examples that Ruby Pryor shared in our conversation about global design this week.

Unfortunately, for people on the other side of the world, global design tends to be an afterthought that is constantly pushed back in favor of adding the next big feature.

But it doesn’t always have to be this way.

Don’t miss my conversation with Ruby where she digs into some simple things you can do to help improve your experience for users that really aren’t like you!

🎯 Here are some key takeaways from our chat

1️⃣ Build empathy through diverse media consumption: While firsthand experience is ideal, immersing yourself in books, movies, and even social media from different cultures can provide valuable insights.

2️⃣ Frame the need for global design in terms of business opportunity: When promoting the need for global design with your team, highlight the potential benefits of designing for a global audience.

3️⃣ Use service design to understand the broader ecosystem: Service design can help us understand the broader ecosystem in which our products live. This can help us design products that are more contextually applicable and user-centered.

4️⃣ Be aware of the difference between high-context and low-context cultures: In high-context cultures, communication may be more indirect, requiring you to read between the lines.

5️⃣ Pay attention to the global implications of the details: UI Elements and copy like date formats, currency symbols, time references, and even discount codes can significantly impact user experience across regions.
